Status as of 18 July 2026 · checked against the official ESMA register

Yes — BitGo is MiCA-licensed: authorised as a CASP by BaFin (Germany) in May 2025. The institutional custody specialist holds a broad BaFin CASP authorisation (May 2025) — six of the ten MiCA services, including custody, exchange and execution for institutional clients.

What this means for you: You are dealing with an EU-supervised firm: MiCA's conduct, disclosure and client-asset segregation rules apply, and complaints can be escalated to BaFin. It is not a guarantee against investment losses.

Common questions

Who regulates BitGo in the EU?

BitGo is authorised as a crypto-asset service provider (CASP) by BaFin in Germany, with the licence granted in May 2025. The authorisation is recorded in the ESMA register under the entity BitGo Europe GmbH — which is what makes it MiCA-compliant under Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 (often written MiCAR).

Can BitGo serve customers across the whole EEA?

A CASP licence can be passported across the EEA, but we have not confirmed BitGo's passporting notifications — check the ESMA register entry for the countries it covers.

Does MiCA protect my funds on BitGo?

MiCA requires authorised CASPs to segregate client crypto-assets and funds, follow conduct and disclosure rules, and answer to BaFin. It is not a deposit guarantee — crypto-assets remain high-risk and can lose value.

How do I verify BitGo's licence myself?

Search the official ESMA CASP register for BitGo Europe GmbH. Registers change weekly — the register, not this page, is the authoritative source.
